January 6th: The Holiday Nobody Asked For

Oh, Marjorie Taylor Greene, the gift that keeps on giving. In her latest attempt to rewrite history and sprinkle some conspiracy-flavored glitter on the truth, she’s now pushing to make January 6th a national holiday. Yes, you read that right—a day to honor what she calls a “peaceful protest” where rioters allegedly showed their patriotism. You know, nothing screams “patriotism” like smashing windows, storming the halls of democracy, and wielding bats, poles, and yes, even guns. But hey, according to Marjorie, those were just props for the revolution-themed cosplay, right?

Let’s take a moment to unpack this. Greene insists that the rioters were unarmed. Apparently, in her world, bats and poles are just misunderstood sporting equipment, and pepper spray is a new fragrance from Yankee Candle. But facts are stubborn things, and video footage shows otherwise. Yet here we are, with Greene trying to turn chaos into kumbaya.

And then there’s Donald Trump, the maestro of misinformation himself. He’s been singing the same tune, calling January 6th a “peaceful protest” and accusing Democrats of concocting the whole thing like some dramatic Netflix original. He’s even promised to pardon all convicted rioters on his first day in office. Because nothing says “law and order” like giving a free pass to people who literally tried to overthrow the government.

But wait, there’s more! Trump also wants to launch an investigation into the January 6th Committee. You know, because wasting even more taxpayer dollars on a revenge tour is exactly what America needs right now. Forget infrastructure or healthcare—let’s focus on avenging the poor souls who got caught red-handed on camera breaking into the Capitol. Priorities, people!

The real kicker here is how this ongoing circus of misinformation is tearing apart any hope for bipartisanship in politics. It’s not just about left vs. right anymore; it’s about fact vs. fiction. And unfortunately, the fiction seems to be winning over a chunk of the population. Greene and Trump’s alternate reality is like a bad soap opera—entertaining for some, but exhausting for everyone else.

So what do we do? Well, for starters, maybe we don’t give people like Marjorie Taylor Greene another term in office. Call me crazy, but perhaps we should elect leaders who prioritize truth over theatrics and unity over division. The last thing this country needs is a national holiday celebrating one of its darkest days.

January 6th doesn’t need to be a holiday—it needs to be a lesson. A lesson in what happens when lies are weaponized, when patriotism is distorted, and when leaders prioritize their own agendas over the good of the nation. Let’s leave January 6th where it belongs: in the history books as a cautionary tale, not on our calendars as a day off work.

Until then, we’ll just keep shaking our heads and hoping for better days ahead. Preferably days without bats and pepper spray.
